I have another finish!

Yep! My second finish for 2020! It is a WIP from 2019 from the RSC. Technically, it could have been finished in 2019 since the last month is October but I like to add 2 more colors to make 12 blocks. So getting it done in the 1st quarter of the year is pretty good! 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻
I really like the way this one turned out! The pattern is called Reverse Rainbow Starburst Block that I found on Pinterest. The tutorial is by KatSoper.
If you follow me, you have seen these blocks come together. Each block is made from 24 4" squares from scraps in the month's color and one white. 4 of the color blocks are made into the star points. I chose not to add any sashing or borders. The back is a rainbow geometric pattern I found.
For the quilting, I stitched in the ditch around each star. I decided to do a pretty close meander around the stars with a rainbow variegated thread and some free hand circles in the center of each star in the color thread of the block.

I decided to name this quilt Reach for the Stars.
This quilt finishes at 51" x 68". I finished hand stitching the binding on Wednesday and the label yesterday!
Hooray! for another finish!

Rainbow Scrap Challenge for 2019 progress

At this time of year, many of the monthly challenges come to an end. Then it is time to try to finish them and make quilts (not UFOs)! If you have been following along with me this year for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge, I did 2 blocks: The Waterfront Starburst and the Reverse Star blocks. I finished the Waterfront Starburst blocks and posted them here. Those blocks have been put together into a top and the quilt has been sandwiched and pin basted. It is now waiting for some time for me to get to the quilting!
I finally put together the remaining Reverse Star blocks.
in browns
in blacks
in peach/corals
Here are all the blocks together!
No sashing on this quilt but I may add a border.
I will link up to Scrap Happy Saturday over at So Scrappy.
In the meantime, I have been working on a bit of Christmas sewing. Here is a sneak peek.
This is a table topper from Vicki's Crafts and Quilting as part of the 12 Days of Christmas Blog Hop hosted by Sarah @Confessional of a Fabric Addict. All that's left is hand stitching the binding!

A Quick Update

I'm back again with a quick update! I finished my second block for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge ~ Reverse Star!
I'll be linking up to Scrap Happy Saturday over at So Scrappy!
Go here to see my Waterfront Starburst block.
I also was able to sew all my house blocks for the Mosaic Mystery Quilt ~ the 1st sewing step of the mystery hosted by Meadow Mist Designs.
I’m linking up to September House Block linkup at Meadowmist designs.
I also made the bonus HST blocks! They will have to wait to be trimmed to size.
I'll be away from my sewing room for a week so I'll see if I can get another block done before I leave. 🤞🏻

My August RSC Blocks

I can't believe that it is already a week into August! The summer is flying by!
The August color for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge is light blues.
Although I have lots of blue scraps, light blues, not so much.
Here is the Reverse Star block.
And the Waterfront Starburst block.
Also on August 1st, the cutting instructions for the Meadow Mist Mosaic Mystery Quilt became available. Here are my cuts.
I still need to cut one of those stacks of background squares into triangles and some borders but I will wait on that until it gets closer to the next step.
I'm linking up here.
Not that I don't have enough to sew, but I have been back at natural dyeing. I have been trying different materials to dye. I have used black beans, grapefruit (also used oranges but I overdyed the fabric), marigolds, turmeric, madder root, and avocado pits. I also experimented with adding iron and washing soda to change the colors.
For the second dye bath with marigolds, I decided to try a shibori technique using rubber bands. Below is the results. It is such a pretty yellow with fun markings!
Natural dyeing has been fun...makes me feel like a scientist!
I'll leave you with a sneak peek at what I'm working on...
and a picture of my grandson! Isn't he adorable!

A finish and some slow progress

After a very busy end of the school year, I finished the T-shirt quilt that I was commissioned! The top was finished in the beginning of May but then it was on hold for a couple of reasons: I needed to complete the charity quilt for the Hands2Help project that I committed to making, I was waiting on the fabric order for the back and binding, and school was hopping at the end of the year so I was working almost every day!
They chose a grid style quilt. Gabby likes aqua blues so I used those colors for the sashings and border.
The backing is an aqua batik.

Finished and delivered in time for her graduation party!
Then I realized, it was June which meant a new color of the month. I headed over to So Scrappy to find that dark blue will be the color play for June!
Here is Waterfront Starburst in dark blue with a low volume in blue.
Here are the 6 blocks so far for the 2019 challenge!
And my Reverse Star block.
And all 6 together!
Little by little I'll catch up on my monthly blocks!

In the meantime, I was determined to do a little bit of hand dyeing of fabrics. I started with some avocado pits. Would you guess they turn your fabrics pink?
Avocado pits and skins.

The avocado bath.

The apron I dyed with the avocado bath.
The pink yardage is a bit lighter.
I have tried citrus peels but didn't get much color. It turned a very pale yellow.
I have learned that natural dyeing is a lot of trial and error.
I'll try a bit more but we will see if it is worth the time.
Now I need to catch up on my Quiet Play Pattern Club blocks!

Some more catching up

I finally got my 2nd block for May's RSC done! Here is my Reverse Star block done up in Orange.
I'll be linking up to Scrap Happy Saturday over at So Scrappy.
I also was able to complete my April blocks for the Quiet Play Pattern Club. April's word block was Joy! I used a turquoise color for the background and some Kona oranges for the hexagons.
The other blocks included this cute rainbow sewing machine and the bunny!
I'm using Kona cotton solids for these blocks.
Isn't this so cute! I think I could like a rainbow machine! It would make me smile!
And how cute is this bunny?
Three more blocks to add to the collection. I'm excited to see how this will all come together!
Now to get to the May block!

A new month brings a new color

April has found its way which means a new color for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge! March did not go out like a lamb around here so I'm very happy April arrived! We are finally seeing a few warmer days (still below average) but sights of Spring have been spied ~ robins, buds on trees, some early Spring flowers pushing up through the soil and aqua blue!
Here is my 1st block of aqua blues. This is my Reverse Star block.
Here are the 1st 4 blocks together!
Each block will finish at 17"

I also got to cut into by blue stash fabrics that I pulled for the Optical Illusion quilt I planned to make. These are paper pieced churn dash blocks. The size change to create the illusion.
I was debating on how to finish this quilt...borders? What kind? Then my daughter suggested making a giant churn dash block as the border. What a great idea! I had plenty of fabric left in my stash so I got to work.
I love how it frames the optical illusion blocks. I used a 1/4" Kona Snow inner border as a break between the middle and the border. I sewed the big churn dash as the border with the corner HSTs being 8".  This pattern is from Heleen Pinkster Quilt Design.

In Like a Lion...

It's March and as the saying goes, the weather has been roaring. Cold and still snowy! I was lucky to have spent the last part of February into early March down with my family in Austin, TX. Although the weather was up and down (true Spring weather), it was nothing like Chicago weather!
Because I expected to spent lots of time with my grandson (and I did), I only  brought a book for reading and a small reverse applique project.
Not long after arriving in Austin, my DD3 asked if I could knit a baby hat for a college friend of hers that was expecting soon. Since I didn't have any knitting supplies with me, I looked though my DD2's supplies and found needles that would work. We went to Hobby Lobby for some yarn (in the color she wanted), and I was ready. Of coarse, I knitted one for my grandson, too!
While I was at it, my DD2 asked if I could knit another one for their friends that had a baby girl a few weeks before my grandson was born. So, I added a crocheted bitty flower to the hat.
Done with baby hats, my DD3 wanted a hat for herself. She scrolled through my Pinterest board and found a hat with cables! How was I going to manage that without a cable needle. Hmmm 🤔 I used a circular needle as the cable needle and used double points for knitting in the round! It worked!
I did work a little bit on my reverse applique blocks, however, I struggled with the inner and outer corners/points. I'll keep trying ~ a little here and there.
My last project before coming home was a play mat for my grandson. My DD2 wanted something to go under the wooden gym she made. She wanted a high contrast black and white print. We went to several big box stores and didn't find anything. Then we went to the local quilt shop where the saleslady suggested using different fabrics in the quadrants. Why didn't we think of that?
My daughter choose 2 different fabrics and we bought 2 fat quarters each.
We found a cute black and white flannel print for the back. We purchased a thick polyester batting, black bias tape, and black and white perle cotton thread. I went to work! My DD2 has a old basic sewing machine (works great but doesn't have quilt accessories.) We cut each fat quarter into squares and stitched them together. Then we cut it into a circle as well as the backing and batting. We then sandwiched it and I got started hand quilting using Big Stitch quilting. Trimmed it and added the bias tape binding and ta da!
The stripes are stitched in the black stripes with black perle cotton and the white print is stitched with white perle cotton in arches following the pattern.
Here is my grandson enjoying it!
Once home, I made a list of all the sewing/quilting that I needed to catch up on. The first being the RSC for March. The color for March is green. Here is my Reverse Star block!
One down....

February brings sunshine yellow

The start of February and some warmer temperatures! So glad we are on the other side of that bitter cold! February also brings a new color for the RSC and it is YELLOW!
I had time to play with the first of two blocks that I'm doing this year
~ Reverse Star!
(sorry it needs a good pressing)
It is bright and cheerful with promise of an early spring!
(according to the IL's groundhog, Woodstock Willie's prediction on Saturday)
I wish on this star that it comes true!
